OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between 16 phenotypic parameters and the diameter of the tracheal lumen and endotracheal tube size (ETS) in Dalmatian puppies. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective nonblinded study. ANIMALS: Twenty-nine Dalmatian puppies, <5 months of age, referred to the Veterinary Faculty Clinics, Burdur, Turkey. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The diameter of the tracheal lumen was assessed using lateral cervical radiographs and the ETS was determined for each puppy. The relationships between ETS and body mass, age, dimensions of carpal and digital pads of the thoracic limb, length of the philtrum and the distance between the philtrum and lateral nasal edges were analysed statistically. RESULTS: The linear relationships between the ETS and the vertical length of the fourth digital pad (r2 = 0.915), and body mass (r2 = 0.908) were higher than with other parameters. Two predictive formulae for ETS derived from regression lines are: ETS +/- SE (0.20) = [body mass (kg) x 6/10]+2.5 and ETS +/- SE (0.19) = [vertical length of fourth digital pad (cm) x 6] - 2. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: These formulae provide a practical guide to ETS selection in Dalmatian puppies.  相似文献

Cryptosporidium parvum (C. parvum) is the causal agent of cryptosporidiosis in many animals, mainly cattle, and possesses a high zoonotic potential. It occurs worldwide and ubiquitously. Detection of C. parvum is mainly performed directly but purification of the oocysts is useful to increase sensitivity and to obtain oocyst material for further use. The study was designed to compare (a) three different direct diagnostic methods, namely modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining, carbol fuchsin staining and conventional PCR, and (b) three routine oocyst purification methods, in particular flotation with saturated sodium chloride solution, Sheather's sucrose solution and a Percoll(?) gradient. During comparison of purification methods, special regard was paid to the ability to separate morphologically intact oocysts from the morphologically degenerated fraction or viable from non-viable oocysts, respectively. Results: (a) Diagnostic methods: Most effective in C. parvum oocysts detection in calf faeces was PCR; carbol fuchsin and modified Ziehl-Neelsen stainings achieved comparable results. (b) Purification methods: Oocyst flotation using sodium chloride solution showed to be superior to Percoll(?) gradient centrifugation and sugar flotation in terms of purification quality, recovery efficacy (yield) and reduction of the proportion of degenerated or non-viable oocysts.  相似文献

Summary

Heritage peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch) varieties in Emilia-Romagna, Italy’s leading peach-producing region, are largely marked by melting, juicy, aromatic white-fleshed fruit with a short shelf-life and susceptibility to bruising.While these varieties have rapidly been replaced since the 1950’s by yellow-fleshed peaches from US breeding programmes with improved handling resistance, the Fruit Research Unit of the Agricultural Research Council, at Forlì, has begun an effort to safeguard and characterise the heritage varieties of Emilia-Romagna. The programme has screened 26 local heritage accessions using a set of 16 highly polymorphic microsatellite (simple sequence repeat; SSR) markers to assess genetic diversity, to elucidate inter-relationships, and to resolve any cases of homonymy. Seven international peach cultivars have been included in order to standardise allele scoring. This study resulted in 19 unique molecular profiles among the heritage accessions, and a relatively high mean observed heterozygosity value of 0.49 for a germplasm pool from a restricted region, an indicator of potential genetic diversity. The main morphological features of the heritage peaches are reported, and potential benefits for future breeding programmes discussed.  相似文献

The effects of four light intensities (1000 lx, 500 lx, 50 lx, 3 lx) on growth, survival and feeding activity in common sole (Solea solea L.) larvae were studied from 4 to 51 days post hatching (dph). During the pelagic larval stage (4–12 dph), larvae reared at 3 lx showed a lower growth. From 19 onwards, the larvae reared under 3 lx displayed a significant ( 0.05) higher SGR than the other treatments and a higher final weight compared to 1000 lx and 500 lx. Survival rate was higher under intermediate light intensities (500 and 50 lx). Larvae reared at 3 lx displayed a significant delay in the degree of metamorphosis compared to the other treatments, while at 33 dph metamorphosis was completed under all treatments. Histological examination revealed the importance of vision and light in the first feeding of this species, while after metamorphosis, the full development of other sensory organs indicated that feeding activity is also mediated by chemosensory perception. Results indicate that high light intensity seems to be more suitable during the pelagic larvae, while the opposite would ensure better growth from the onset of metamorphosis to the benthic phase.  相似文献

The genus Puccinia represents rust infections, which are responsible for great productivity losses in crops of commercial and ornamental plants worldwide. This work is aimed at determining the occurrence of Puccinia spp. spores in Madeira Island in order to infer the exposure risks from a phytopathological point of view. A phytopathological analysis was performed in 203 local plant samples between January 2003 and December 2012. During the same period the airborne concentrations of rust spores were monitored following well-established guidelines. Aerobiological data was compared with meteorological records. Based on macro and microscopic analyses, five species of rusts were identified: P. horiana, P. buxi, P. porri, P. pelargonii-zonalis, and P. sorghi, and they were found mostly in spring and summer. A total of 20 samples out of 203 analysed plants (9.8%), were infected with Puccinia spores, i.e., P. horiana (5.9%), P. buxi (1.47%), P. porri and P. pelargonii-zonalis (0.98%), and P. sorghi (0.5%). During the studied period Puccinia spores attained an annual average concentration of 126 spores m?3 and most of them were recorded between March and October. Meteorological factors were determinant in fluctuations in spore concentration. Relative humidity was the parameter that favoured the biggest release and dispersal of the rust spores, whereas rainfall revealed a significant negative effect. Rusts do not represent an important plant pathogen in Madeira Island, as shown by the low infection frequencies and levels of airborne spore concentrations.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to determine the influence of dietary protein levels on growth, feed utilization and liver histology in common sole. Four isoenergetic diets were formulated to contain four different crude protein levels: 39 (P39), 45 (P45), 51 (P51) and 57 (P57) % dry weight. Fifty animals per tank (initial weight 10.2 ± 0.4 g) were randomly distributed into twelve 500 litre square tanks (bottom surface: 5600 cm2) connected to a closed recirculation system. The diets were tested in triplicate for 84 days. At the end of the experiment, the final weight ranged from 19.6 (P39) to 25.4 g (P57). The specific growth rate showed statistical differences between groups, with the best results in the group fed diet P57 (1.07% day?1). Significant differences between groups were also recorded for the feed conversion ratio, with values of 1.31, 1.28, 1.12 and 0.94 in P39, P45, P51 and P57 respectively. Gross lipid efficiency was also significantly affected by the dietary treatment, with the highest value (42.07%) found in P57. Ammonia excretion, expressed as g 100 g?1 protein intake, was significantly lower for group P39 (2.46) than groups P51 (4.70) and P57 (4.75). Increased incidence of lipid droplets in hepatocytes was observed when the dietary protein levels increased and/or dietary lipid decreased.  相似文献

The presence of Eimeria spp. oocysts in fecal samples collected from 1,108 broiler houses in six regions, representing about 12% of all broiler farms in Turkey, was studied using the modified McMaster method. The age of the chickens in the 1,108 pens varied from 1 to 50 days. Oocysts were found in 602 (54.3%) of these broiler houses, and the mean OPG (oocysts per gram of feces) in those samples was 36,498.7 (50–952,000). No indication of clinical coccidiosis or other clinically evident infection or wide mortality was encountered in any of the pens studied. Further study showed that the age of the chickens, the occurrence of diarrhea on the houses and the density of broiler breeding in the area correlated with subclinical coccidiosis prevalence.  相似文献
